In February 2016, our students went to Rickover Naval Academy on the Northwest side of the Chicago for a Chess Tournament co-sponsored by Youth Chess Foundation of Chicago (YCFC) and Chicago Chess Foundation (CCF). For our first time at a tournament, our students rose to the challenge, fought hard, and represented Altus very well!!

Eleven students participated and won at least one game. Seven students scored at least 3 out of 5 points. Out of 18 teams our 7th/8th graders tied for 3rd in the team ranking. And Isai Hernandez achieved the highest ranking among the 7th and 8th graders from Altus and 12th among the other schools.

Many of our students can be seen throughout the day playing chess every break they get at Altus. Before school in our lunchroom, at snack time in their classrooms, during lunch with a sandwich in one hand, or after school while waiting to be picked up. They play against each other or Mr. Felipe and Mr. Rivera. Their dedication has truly showed in the tournament. We are so proud of all their hard work and determination and look forward to the next tournament.

Ethan M. and Clifton make a move in unison.
